Mini-Review: Green Dolphin Street (1947)

Handsome soap-opera!

Two sisters, Marriane and Marguirette (Lana Turner and Donna Reed, respectively) compete for the attention of the same handsome newcomer William (Richard Hart) but that is just the tip of the iceberg of the sprawling plot of Victor Saville's adaptation of Elizabeth Goudge novel.

Amongst some beautiful scenery, there are nuns, duplicitous prostitutes, ships, high-tides, mistaken identities, unrequited loves, civil wars, and a spectacularly staged earthquake (winner of Special Effects Academy Award!) The performances are good and the film very watchable!
